Food – What is it?

Food is any material consumed to give nutrition to an organism, usually in a living body. In the simplest terms food is food eaten by an animal, but in more complex scientific terms food refers to the chemical composition of that food, together with the proportions of various elements known as macrominerals, metacarpals and arginents. Food is generally of animal, plant or fungi origin, and has necessary nutrients, including proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, or other minerals, in appropriate proportions. Normally the food we eat is nutritious, containing a range of nutrients that are required for our bodies. However, depending on the diet, some food is beneficial to health, but harmful to health, other food is harmful to health, but good to health, and so on.

Plants contain carbohydrates and fats, while animals have proteins and vitamins. The main food components of plants are carbohydrates and fats. Plants contain carbohydrates by way of the starch they contain, for example, the starch in rice and the starch in wheat. Animals contain proteins by way of the protein they have, for example, in the case of meat. Fats are obtained from plants and are found in butter, cream, margarine, mayonnaise, tropical oils, safflower oil, and coconut oil. Vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients are contained in food, especially when they are part of the main food or the staple diet of an individual or a country.

An important aspect of food is that it is composed of one or more nutrient, which are collectively called nutrients. One type of nutrient is called macrominerals, another type is called arginents, a third type is known as phytochemicals, and there are other minor food ingredients that together constitute food. The major food components in vegetables, for example, are carbohydrates, proteins and vitamins. Some vegetables, like cauliflower, bean sprouts, okra, spinach, cabbage, tomatoes, mushrooms, carrots, corn, peas, potatoes, onions, garlic, broccoli, eggplant, etc. have high concentrations of certain nutrients, which are essential for human body. The other food elements found in vegetables include fatty acids, alkaloids, starches, and fibers.
