In Maine, Governor Janet Mills vetoed a bill to legalize online sports betting. She was not convinced that residents in the state wanted to expand gambling and thought the proposal was too lax when it came to protecting people with gambling problems. Now, however, backers of sports betting hope to work with Mills to pass a bill in 2021 that could become law in January of 2022. Meanwhile, Republican Gov. Charlie Baker and the Democratic-controlled General Court of Massachusetts are also backing sports betting.
