Fashion is a broad genre of human activity and self-fashion in a certain context and at a certain time, of dressing, footwear, clothing, makeup, hairstyle, body posture, and attitude. The word means a general appearance defined by the fashion business as what is fashionable. This can be a generic definition or reflect a company’s or individual’s personal tastes and standards for meeting a given situation.
In the high fashion world, the fashion world of fashion design, there are many different approaches to the definition of what is fashionable. High fashion magazines may define it as clothes with extreme, almost comic book level of exaggeration. Other designers, who work with the high fashion world, may insist on a more literal approach to the definition. They may insist that clothes are fashionable if they convey an idea about a problem in our society or our culture, or if the clothes themselves somehow represent an idea or represent a statement.
High fashion designers such as Christian Dior and Mario Testino have created clothes that are very appealing to the public because of their outlandish designs and lack of restraint. When high fashion designers are asked what is fashionable, they tend to say outrageous, absurd statements. Because these designers have such a large following of devotees, and are so beloved, they have to constantly push the envelope and try new and more outrageous things in their work. If they don’t do it, they risk being left in the dust during the next fashion trend.
